The return
... in more ways than one.
After my health scare kablooey earlier this fall, I had to consider whether I could remain in Toronto at my exciting but taxing job, or if it would be better to return to Ottawa and the friends and family therein while I looked after myself. Ultimately, I decided that although I enjoyed the challenges of working at a downtown criminal law firm, they deserved someone who could give 100% of his energy and health and pull 15-hour days without needing to take time off for doctors and appointments, and I needed to take the time now to get better or in a couple of months things would just get worse and worse.
So, I made the hardest decision of my life and returned home.
Slowly but surely, however, things are beginning to look up. I don't have a home as such, but my friend Natalie has graciously put me up while I get back on my feet and sort myself out, and in turn I'm helping her with some bills and her law school homework, and providing a distraction for her cats (who otherwise idle away their hours interfering with her studies by sitting on textbooks, stealing pens, eating notes, and walking all over the laptop keyboard).
It's also great to be back with my friends, as much as I don't always have the time or energy to see them. But I'm doing my best to make those connections again, and I feel great to be welcomed back so openly by everyone. I think this crisis is in fact working out for the best.
More soon.
